How Bathukamma is observed
Nine days of flowers, kept by the women of Telangana and in the Telangana-speaking districts across the border. A conical arrangement of seasonal flowers is built each evening, sung around in a circle, and floated on a tank at the end. It runs alongside Navaratri and ends the day before Dussehra.
The flowers
Tangedu, gunuka, banthi, chamanthi, lotus, katla, teku and the other flowers of the monsoon's end. Tangedu and gunuka are the ones the festival is built on, and both flower in the fields in exactly this season.
The base
A brass or bamboo plate, and a gummadi or pumpkin flower with a turmeric Gauramma set at the top of the finished stack.
Naivedyam
A different offering each of the nine days — maleeda, sattupindi, muddapappu, and on the ninth day the sakinalu and the five kinds of rice that give Saddula Bathukamma its name.
Gather the flowers
Flowers are picked from the fields and the tank bunds through the day, mostly by the men and children of the house, and sorted by colour before the evening.
Build the stack
The flowers are laid in concentric rings on the plate, colour by colour, each ring smaller than the last, until the arrangement is a cone. Gauramma — turmeric shaped by hand — is set at the top.
Bring it to the courtyard
At dusk the women of the street bring their Bathukammas to a common courtyard or crossing and set them in a circle.
Sing around itBathukamma paatalu
The women circle the arrangements clapping, singing the Bathukamma songs. The songs are their own body of oral literature — about the fields, about daughters, about the Goddess — and are learned by hearing, not from books.
Float itNimajjanam
The arrangement is carried to the village tank or cheruvu and set on the water. The flowers and the turmeric go into the tank, and the plate is brought home.
Share the offering
The day's naivedyam is shared among the women before they leave the water.
How it differs by region
Telangana
The state festival, kept in every district. Engili Pula Bathukamma on the first day and Saddula Bathukamma on the ninth, the largest, on the eve of Dussehra. Hyderabad's Tank Bund gathering is the biggest single one.
Border districts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra
Kept in the Telangana-speaking villages of Nanded, Adilabad's neighbours and the northern AP districts, in the same nine-day form.
Practical
- Tank bunds get crowded and slippery after the monsoon. Most panchayats light the approach and post someone at the water for Saddula Bathukamma — worth asking for if it has not been arranged.
- Only flowers, turmeric and the natural plate go into the water. Plastic sheeting and thermocol bases have started appearing and defeat the point of floating it at all.

Why tangedu and gunuka flowers in particular?
Both flower across Telangana's fields and tank bunds at exactly this point in the year, as the monsoon ends. The festival is built from what the season actually gives; the flowers are also held to clean the water they are floated on.
What does the name mean?
Bathukamma is Telugu for 'come alive, mother'. Gauramma — Gauri — is the Goddess invoked, shaped in turmeric and set at the top of the flower stack.
Is Bathukamma the same as Navaratri?
They run over the same nine days and both are for the Goddess, but Bathukamma is its own festival with its own songs, its own offerings and its own form. It is kept by women, outdoors and at the tank, rather than at a home shrine.
Why is it floated on a tank rather than immersed in a river?
The cheruvu is the village's own water body, and the festival belongs to it. Floating the flowers there is also the old practice of returning what the season gave to the tank the season filled.
