Karimnagar sits on the banks of the Manair, a tributary of the Godavari, in the north-central part of Telangana. The town's name comes from Karim-ud-Din, a 17th-century Qutb Shahi commander; before that, the area was known as Sabbinadu in the Kakatiya period and was famous for granite quarries that still ship stone across South India today.
Agriculture is the heart of the district. Rice, cotton, maize, and turmeric come off these fields in volumes that earn it the local title of "granary of north Telangana." The Lower Manair Dam, completed in 1985, irrigates over 1.5 lakh acres across the district. Outside the agrarian economy, Karimnagar is known for its silver filigree work (a GI-tagged craft) and its powerloom weaving cluster in Sirsilla just to the north-west.
Politically, Karimnagar is a Lok Sabha constituency that has historically swung between major national parties; current MP is from the BRS. The district was reorganised in October 2016 — the previous larger Karimnagar district was split into Karimnagar, Jagtial, Peddapalli, and Rajanna Sircilla.
