Cuttack frames its goddesses against chandi medha — backdrops worked in the city's own silver filigree. The first was raised at Choudhury Bazar in 1956; they now stand twenty to twenty-five feet and carry between one and six quintals of silver, and by 2023 the city counted thirty-two of them. The filigree trade and the festival keep each other going.
